Arivaca, Arizona used to be a self-described "hippie compound" 50 years ago when a group of friends protesting the Vietnam War jetted down to the farthest place they could get to to set up camp. On the U.S.-Mexico Border, however, Arivaca has recently been noteworthy for a different reason; the once harmonious town has been a host to various "border militias," armed vigilante groups who are dedicated to catching and apprehending migrants crossing the desert into the United States. The once civil town of Arivaca is now seen through national pundits' eyes, both as a final bastion for border security on the right, and an example of how militarism and facism can go wrong on the left.
